In the last few decades, education has evolved significantly. Traditional classroom-based classes have been replaced by online learning methods that allow for the flexibility of recorded courses and class meetings held via videoconferencing software that can be used in real-time. Even these environments you can create in your virtual classroom online methods may not be sufficient for students who prefer classrooms with real-time interaction.
Live learning online is a viable alternative to these other methods of learning online that allow students and instructors to interact in real-time using videoconferencing programs like Zoom. The classes offer students the opportunity to ask questions, resolve confusion, and gain more understanding of the subject matter.
Although live learning has many advantages, some students may struggle to adapt to the type of online learning that is offered. This study explores student ability to live learn and identifies the main factors that determine it. The findings reveal that the key influencing variables include motivation to learn online, self-directed learning capability. The researchers also conducted a multi-group analysis as well as a post hoc test to compare the gender differences among undergraduate and graduate students as well as sub-degree students. The researchers found that postgraduates are better equipped for live learning than undergraduates and sub-degrees.
It is suggested that instructors set clear expectations for what students need to be aware of and learn prior to, during and after during a Live Session. This means providing additional materials like notes, gist-based quizzes, sketches, concept maps and study guides. In addition, instructors should design exercises that reinforce the lessons that students have learned on their own, for instance, discussing, reviewing, arguing and analyzing.
